Log Cabin quilt class

It has been a week of struggles here in Tulsa at the Studio. My back is still giving me some problems. I am doing all the right things and it just takes time for it to heal.

The weather has been odd, somewhere between blizzard and Tahiti. Which is pretty typical for Oklahoma this time of year. I never know whether to take a coat or not. So, I end up over dressing and then leaving the coat in the car. I have some huge snowballs out in the front yard and more sleet is projected for this week. My college kids come home this weekend for Spring Break which starts a huge round of days offish.

I’m starting my quilting class this week and here are a few of the fabrics I have been considering.  I am trying to use my stash for the Use My Stash Challenge.

Log Cabin quilt class Log Cabin quilt class

It is a log cabin quilt. I am going to make a twin sized quilt instead of a lap quilt as I already have so many crochet afghans around. The last thing we need is another lap quilt. It has been really stressful to figure out how much fabric I am needing to take to class. I really didn’t want to take all of my stash fabrics with me. The ones I did take needed to be ironed! So I finally sat down and figured out what to do. After calling both my Mom and my good friend Dawn. She quilts, regularly… as in all the time and Mom has made a log cabin quilt before. I  knew that they would be able to help me or at least listen to me while I talked through  it.

I hope to show you some photos tonight after class. I hope we do more than cut strips out, tonight. My back is not going to like that.

2 Crochet Baby Blankets

I seem to be on a roll these days crocheting baby blankets. I started this blue and white one before Christmas and then moved on to this grey one. They are both beautiful but I have to admit that I prefer the blue and white one. I have no idea why, well, it might be because I was using a new pattern with the grey one and had to frog it back 9 rows a couple of times.

I do like the almost houndstooth print of the this grey blanket. I also like that it could work with either a boy baby or a girl baby. This makes it a perfect gift for someone that doesn’t know which gender they are having.  They are both crocheted out of soft acrylic yarn and will wash well. You will be able to find them at ChocolatesBabyShop on Friday of this week!

These are also crocheted out of my stash and will make items 16 and 17 for the Use Your Stash Challenge. So I did make progress last week and things are marching on with the challenge. I also spent some time carefully cutting out some quilt projects. I was being careful of my back so I didn’t get much sewing done but I am working on other projects.

I started a new baby blanket yesterday and I have made good progress. I hope to get it finished this week as well. It is in shades of purple. If you are following me on Instagram you have seen that it looks like this.

The colors are a bit off as I took this photo with my cell phone after dark. Which really changes how the colors look.

Baby Giraffe

I spent some time last week trying to figure out what I could crochet. I had hurt my back and I felt burned out crocheting baby blankets. I have recently finished two blankets and I was wanting to do something completely different. I ran across a really cute pattern on Pinterest. It seemed to hit the right chord and off I ran. I actually was able to use up some bits and pieces of yarn and I love the end result. These two cuties do fit with the Use Your Stash Challenge as I used up some small balls of stash yarn.

Baby Giraffe

I showed you the arms and legs on Instagram and then quickly added the bodies.

Baby Giraffe

Baby Giraffe

Here they are together as they are already best buddies. The colors in the lower photo are a bit darker than they should be.

Baby Giraffe

Perfect for babies or big sisters and brothers. The faces are embroidered on with yarn and the bodies are firmly sewn on. They sure are cute and were fun to make. You can make your own if you crochet. I will be adding these to ChocolatesBabyShop on Friday. The pattern is available on Ravelry. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/crochet-giraffe-2

So this would be 14 and 15 on my Use Your Stash Challenge! I love these and I will make some more Amigurumi. They are easier than I thought they would be.

The snow is continuing to fall today. It started looking like this at about 9 am this morning.

Baby Giraffe (I know that this isn’t much snow if you are further North than we are but it happens infrequently enough that it is a pretty big weather event for us!) I live in Colorado for several years when I was a child, so I know this isn’t much snow!

Repair a tear in Skinny jeans

My daughter has these jeans that she loves. Our loving dogs jumped up on this brand new pair and put a lovely three corner tear in the leg. The jeans are so skinny that I couldn’t get to them to repair them. I know that holey jeans are the thing, but she doesn’t like holey jeans. So, I had two options: throw them out, or find a way to repair them. I decided to repair them. Here is the process I used to fix her jeans. It is one I learned a long time ago when the boys were little and used to put the knees out on jeans.

Supplies:

a free arm sewing machine,

thread to match or contrast as you choose

pins

scrap piece of denim

scissors

seam ripper

Repair a tear in Skinny jeansHere is the tear on the outside of her jeans.

There are a bunch of extra threads and I didn’t wash the jeans before repairing. I would if I were patching the whole knee as I did when the boys were small. This tear is little and she has just put them on so they are relatively clean.

Step 1. Turn the jeans inside out. See how skinny these are.

Repair a tear in Skinny jeans

2. Cut the serging on the edges of one side of the jeans. This is the opposite side of the decorative top stitching. You do not want to take out the topstitching. It is a hassle to replace and matching the thread and stitch size can be a real issue.

Repair a tear in Skinny jeans

Here I am sliding the point of these scissors up under the edge of the serger stitching.

3. Cut the straight stitching and take it out as well.Repair a tear in Skinny jeans

A seam ripper will help you with this.

4. Cut a patch out of a similar weight fabric. It helps that the fabric has been washed and dryed about the same amount as the jeans you are patching. In this case I cut a  square bit about two inches bigger than the tear.

Repair a tear in Skinny jeans5.Pin the patch in place. Checking on the inside that the patch is smoothly pinned and not wrinkled or wadded.

6. My sewing machine is a free arm machine. Which makes it easier to put the opened up jean leg under the pressure foot. You need to make sure that the patch is smooth under the jean leg.

Using a thread that matches the denim as close as you can get, straight stitch all around the  tear as close as you can get to the actual tear. Use a small stitch length so that it really holds the patch fabric down.

You could use a contrasting thread color if you want to add it as a decorative element.

7. Then using a zig zag stitch. go over the edge of the tear. I chose to use navy thread. Repair a tear in Skinny jeans

Yes, you can see the stitching. but the hole is repaired and I think with boots no one will noticed the repair.

Here is the inside showing the patch and the stitching.

(Yes, my bobbin threads are purple.)Trim your threads on the inside and outside of your jeans. Then trim the patch down.

Repair a tear in Skinny jeansSew up the leg with the straight stitch in the same place that the other stitching was. You want to back stitch at the start and end and be sure to stitch over the original stitching a bit at the start and at the end so that these stitches are well anchored. You don’t want your jean seams to open up while you are wearing them!

I also added a zig zag stitch on the edge of the jeans to keep them from unravelling.

This is the stitch I used.

Here is the finished product!

Yay, her jeans are repaired and now she has a pair for yard work, without the gaping hole that they would have in short order.

My back is a little better but I am not sewing much these days. I have been crocheting quite a bit and I will show you a few of my new projects in the days to come.

4 ideas for using Bib circles

I have a huge stack of bib circles cut out. Bib circles are the centers of the bibs that I remove from the bibs I sew for ChocolatesBabyShop. I keep saving them with no clear purpose in sight. I tried making yo-yos but quickly decided that I do not enjoy pulling that many gathering threads. So, I have been looking around to see if there is anything else I can do with them. I ran across some really good ideas on Pinterest.

This blog tells you how to make the applique circles without having raw edges! Simply a great idea.

There is this beautiful quilt.

I like this raw edge bubble quilt. It looks like it might be more in my style, a little random and unstructured.

I like this one with the black and white background. It sure is cute. It would make a great baby quilt.

This is a great way to use up scraps.

This is still a circle quilt but using scraps and up cycled denim.

I have been off the sewing machine for awhile. I have hurt my back a bit and I am not sure how I did it. I do know that it is slowing down all the sewing. I am afraid that I am falling behind on my Use My stash challenge. I have crocheted tons and I hope to have some new photos early next week. Our son is coming over this weekend to spend some time and I think he will be able to take  some great photos of the new baby blankets I have crocheted lately.

Sampler afghan, 4 blocks a week: Week 6

It has been very cold here this week for Oklahoma and we have had icy, sleet and snowy weather. I did get a chance to crochet these squares but everything else has fallen by the wayside.  So here are the next four squares for the 4 blocks a week. Sampler afghan, 4 blocks a week: Week 7 Sampler afghan, 4 blocks a week: Week 7 Sampler afghan, 4 blocks a week: Week 7 Sampler afghan, 4 blocks a week: Week 7

I have hurt my back so sitting at the sewing machine or even with the crochet hook has become difficult this week. It is healing and I will be up and around in no time. It isn’t serious just a small strain.

4 Blocks a Week – Week 6

I just flat out missed posting my blocks last week. I had too much to do and too little time. I am almost at that point again. Here I go trying to get back on track.

4 blocks a week- Week 6

I am concentrating on tiny squares this week. They are so sweet.

4 blocks a week- Week 6

This rosette is just so cute. I bet it would make a beautiful baby blanket!

4 blocks a week- Week 6

This one is quite a bit larger than the others but the flower in the middle is just sweet.

I need to run and I will talk to you later,

To do revised!

Here is my to do list revised for this week. I really got a lot marked off my to do list last week and this is what I am left with for this week.

  •  Finish quilting the striped quilt!  I finally finished quilting this little quilt.
  •  Put the binding on the stripe quilt  It isn’t perfect and there is much I would change about it but it is finished and I can start on something else, soon. It is bright and pretty. This is number 16.

To do revised!

To do revised!

Here the quilt is waiting on it’s binding and for the basting stitches to be removed.

  •  Cut out and sew  more super hero capes. These are pretty quick and easy to sew. I should get them finished up soon.
  •  Sew cup cozies that take red thread. I batch sew according to thread color it makes the sewing so much faster.
  •  Deconstruct some jeans so they are ready for cutting.  I got this done. Deconstructing jeans is mainly just a bunch of scissor work.
  •  Pack some orders  Whew, packing orders always gives me a bit of stress until I am finished and they are mailed.
  • Clean the studio
  • Sew the aprons already cut out
  • Sew some coffee press cozies
  • Sew buttons on coffee press cozies

The studio needs some cleaning to happen so that it is stays a bit more organized. I do have some sewing to get done as time is getting ahead of me. I also have some fun things that I am wanting to work on.

I have been down with a cold this week so any creating has been to finish projects for orders. I am not moving very quickly and haven’t even felt like crocheting anything or sewing. I also seem to be putting off cleaning the studio. It is always in such a bad state these days. It seems when I am most creative the studio is the most disorganized. So I will be adding organizing to my to do list revised for next week.

What are you working hard at ignoring? Do you have anything that you procrastinate consistently.

Dog Toys…the challenge #14 and #15

I made dog toys for numbers 14 and 15 for the challenge. I had so much fun making the first dog toy that I decided that another one out of denim was a great idea.

Dog Toys

I remember making these rexlace key chains when the kids were little. Then I found this cool site that shows how someone made dog toys with the same braiding pattern.

Dog Toys
http://fastncrazy.blogspot.com/2013/03/szarpak.html

Both websites have instructions on them and there are a ton of youtube videos that will show you different braids and even the simple braid above. I had a bunch of fleece that was given to me by a friend. I have had it for years and I thought that it would work perfectly to make the same kind of toy for our dogs. We have 6 month old puppy  and she is shredding every dog toy with in days. It feels like a terrible waste of money to keep buying toys for her to destroy. This project saves me money and uses stash that would just sit around or be thrown out.

Dog Toys

Then I remembered the jeans I needed to deconstruct. I always throw away the seams. I just haven’t found any other projects that I want to use them for.2015-01-31 09.57.16 2015-01-31 10.16.35

It looks tedious and time consuming. These dog toys really work up very fast. They both took about 20 minutes to make them. Here is the finished product. It looks really durable and works great. The dogs are thrilled.

If you are interested in the Use Your Stash Challenge-2015 you can find my rules here.
