Pot holder Tutorial/pattern

I had some questions about these pot holders that I made for my daughter.

I am not big on piecing tons of tiny squares so I found this tutorial on Sew Mamma Sew that sent me here: http://www.sewmamasew.com/2009/10/elizabeths-fabric-focus-quick-piece-tiny-squares/

Basically you line the squares up on iron on interfacing (sticky side up) and iron them down. Then follow her tutorial for stitching them together.

At the time I thought that I would make some place mats (yes, we do have that many squares). I put them aside (for months) until I was making pot holders this weekend. When I decided to see if they would work better for pot holders. Then I simply cut them into 9″ squares placed them on top of one piece of batting and quilted the front of each pot holder. I cut the backings to fit and placed them over another piece of batting and quilted each back of the pot holder. I added small pieces of ribbon for the hanger loops to each corner and basted them in place. I like basting better than pining. It isn’t as hard on my sewing machine to sew over.

If you need to see the tutorial I used it is here: http://www.mygirlthursday.com/2011/05/diy-scrap-busting-pot-holders.html

They worked out quite well! I’m sorry I don’t have any photos but I was on a sewing kick and I needed to get a bunch done! So this isn’t really my tutorial but a combination of several techniques!

# 47 of 100 items in 100 days!

I made these pretty pot holders for my daughter. I will store them for her until she needs them. She cut them out for her quilt and they were left over. They are  bright and colorful.

100 items in 100 days: #30 – 35

We decorated the inside of these clear glass Christmas ornaments by adding crayon shavings and then melting them with a hair dryer. They were fun to make and now the box of six ornaments is gone out of my stash! We added them to the jar of sticks and hearts.

So this is # 30!

IMG_1549

I crocheted these stars and snowflakes out of up cycled navy cotton yarn. I love the stars in the navy and they just need the hanging loops made. These would be #31-33. I would sell these in a set.IMG_1550

Then I tried these red and white stars. The red and white ragg cotton yarn is thicker than baker’s twine and I am not as pleased with these. This would be # 34 IMG_1551

These are made out the soft cotton yarn left overs that I use to edge the receiving blankets. It is soft and the colors are beautiful! This is #35IMG_1552The stars are out of baby blue wool yarn and the snowflakes out of crochet cotton. I love these together but I made a ton of the snowflakes as they were so easy. I easily have 20-30 of the snowflakes. These are # 36 and 37.

Beautiful Brights!

I have been a bit under the weather but I am feeling better now. I spent the week hanging out on the couch with a blanket, yarn, crochet hook and netflix. I am working with these yarns that are from my stash and I have worked quite a bit on the 100 item challenge. I just didn’t take any photos as I felt so bad. I hope to show you some things later this week.

Here are some of the colorful yarns that I am working with this week.

It is Stylecraft Dk Special and I can’t wait to show you. It is another blanket and it is an easy one! I am working on writing up a pattern. It is looking good but I don’t want to give it away.

100 items in 100 days: # 23 – 29

Yesterday was productive. I finished up quite a few Use Your Stash projects and thought about others.

Here are the ones that I completed along with the back story.

IMG_1523

When I was a young teenager, my Mom made these stars for our Christmas tree.  Parts of the stars were made from scraps of clothing she made for me. I have always wanted to make some for our tree but lacked the skills to get the points to turn out nice in the center.

Finally, I have made them and I do like them. I made five of them and will probably make more in different colors.

So, there are my Christmas stars ornaments. I made five out of scraps in my scrap bin. They count in my 100 items in 100 days and make up numbers 23 – 28! Yay!

I also finished a cute crochet pin cushion and I will post a photo later. Here is the photo of it in process.

Woohoo! Only  79  or correctly 71 more items left, today is not a good math day!

Progress!

It has been a busy week or two or is it three since I started the challenge?  Ok, I checked back and I started on Jan. 17. It has been 2 1/2 weeks or 19 days!

In that time I have finished 24 items! Yay! (As of right now, today)

I have written 2 new patterns and listed them on both Craftsy and Etsy.

I have finished two major projects: the repairs on Kathryn’s quilt and the blue, white, red and grey crochet blanket

I have finished a bundle of little things, including 3 scarves, 5 headbands, and 2 purses.

How do I feel about the 100 item in 100 days Challenge?  I feel pretty good about it, but I feel a little pressured. I have started some new projects but they are going to take some time to finish them.  So, I am not sure if I can finish as quickly as I want to finish. My projected finish date was about April 28 or 29, if I complete one a day! Hmmm…

I really would like to finish up sooner than that. I have some shopping I want to do!=0)

Today: Feb. 3, 2014

Today has certainly been very odd. Hubs was home for part of the day and then left for work halfway through the day. So it has felt off balance all day. We were out of bread, so lunch was a rather yummy potato soup made from hash browns, left over ham bone broth, ham pieces and home made biscuits.

Anyway all of this to say that I got a huge long three hour nap in the middle of the day. I got my next crochet blanket figured out down to the number of squares per color! We now have homemade bread and I have no idea what we are eating for dinner! Woohoo, it seems I am on a roll! Well, not really, but the blanket though is a beauty and seems to just roll of the crochet hooks. The colors are incredible. I am not going to give any sneak peaks this time until it is finished all 248 little 4″ squares! I think it would give it all away.

I have been working on a new pattern for fingerless gloves and after three pairs I am about ready to kick that into production. The pattern is simple and there is no sewing involved.

It is a version somewhere between the red ones above and the grey ones below!

So that is what I have been working on. OH, the sewing machine part came in and I have been working away on #10 The quilt. I hope to be finished with it soon as well. I feel a bit like Einstein to be able to diagnose and order the correct part for my machine!
