June Flowers

2014-06-23 14.32.24

Here are the Gladiolus that we planted shortly after we moved in. Thankfully, they come back every year.

The coneflowers that I planted this Spring are growing and seem really happy.2014-06-23 14.34.04

We planted these lilies about five years ago and this year is the first year I remembering them blooming. I keep having to remind the kids that these are not weeds.

This is the Russian sage in full flower. The bees love it and it has been there for about 9 years. It has migrated from the middle of the flower bed to the edge and is now trying to grown in the yard on the other side of the path. I love it because it doesn’t take much care at all.

The yellow Yarrow is growing beautifully and looks great next to the Russian Sage. I transplanted some to the new flower bed and it is growing  nicely.

We also planted some Iris in this flower bed but only one came up. I think that more will bloom next year.

Irises are my favorite flower and when I dig up the iris bed near the street I will move some more to this flower bed.

The May Garden

I love perennials in my flower beds. These grow in the raised flower bed at the front of the house. I am transplanting an off shoot to the new flower bed.2014-05-23 15.18.55

Aren’t they bright and sunny. I can’t remember the name of them. We also have Russian Sage growing in this flower bed. The sage was planted in the middle and has migrated out to the front edge.

It has bright blue flowers that the bees love. It is tall and ferny and simply lovely and yes I cropped this photo so you can’t see the tree growing in the bed at the back. Here is a good shot of reality. It is the area around the corner from the front garden bed.

It is pretty wild and needs a lot of work. These are the new flowers that we added last week.

English daisies and Purple cone flower both of which we had at our last house. They seem to love hot summers and the so- so watering job that I do.

I have too many projects going right now and I feel really stretched thin on the creative side of things. I am in the process of adding some new to the shop and I feel really pretty overwhelmed and terribly forgetful. I am tending to skip around from project to project during the day and not seeming to accomplish much.

I guess I need a new challenge and there is one I am thinking about but I just can’t decide if I really want to participate. It is a daily listing challenge and I am wondering if it would be wise to try it. I would have to list something new in the shop everyday. Summer, has been a little crazy so far. We have three of the kids home. One is working a full time internship with regular working hours and the other is working almost full time hours at Arby’s. This means that he has crazy hours. So I am not sure about the listing challenge. The other challenge is a one hundred Granny Square block challenge. I am still thinking about this one. I have been tossing it around since we lived in Iowa, which is close to 2 years ago. The other challenge has to do with more scrap busting! I am still thinking about this one, but I know that it wouldn’t be wise to totally stop buying supplies like I did for the 100 items in 100 days challenge!  http://www.chocolatedogstudio.com/2014/01/17/1-thing-for-100-days-challenge/

I do need to use up some scraps so we will see!

Little pears

Long ago, well about seven years ago, I planted a half dead pear tree at the wrong time of year. It had been on sale at the end of the planting season so the choices were small and trees in bad condition. It was a simply a stick with two leaves. I simply planted it in hope that it would some day bear fruit. I watered it faithfully for the first summer season and then promptly forgot it. It was at the bottom of the yard and outside our backyard fence (so the dogs wouldn’t be tempted to chew it up) We had two summers of incredible heat and drought. I had forgotten that it was even there. Every once in a while I would think about it and wonder if the kids  had mowed over it or if it was still there. I could see it was getting taller and in each Spring it would have a few  more leaves. I still wondered what was happening to it and would it bear fruit or be barren. This year we have PEARS! Only about 30 or so but it is growing and looks great!

Evidently even neglected fruit trees bear fruit. My little thought this morning is that we and our children are much like this little pear tree. There are  great character qualities growing in them and us that we have planted that we never see until it is the right time, season or condition for them to show up. Those little forgotten twigs of hope, faith, kindness, love, gentleness; are there growing and leafing out. We just need to water them and encourage them to grow. We must not loose hope or think that they haven’t taken root.
